Libyan Commander Extends Condolences After Army Chief’s Death

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar issued a condolence message following the deaths of Libya’s Army Chief of Staff Mohammed al-Haddad and his delegation in a plane accident close to the Turkish capital, Ankara.

In a statement released by the eastern Libyan armed forces, Haftar expressed “deep sorrow over this tragic loss” and extended his sympathies to the general’s family, tribe, hometown, and “to all the Libyan people.”

Separately, the Benghazi-based House of Representatives also conveyed condolences to the relatives of Haddad and his delegation, as well as to their fellow members in the military.

Libya’s Government of National Unity had earlier announced three days of national mourning in response to the tragedy.

According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the wreckage of the Falcon 50 business jet—which departed Ankara’s Esenboga Airport bound for Tripoli—was discovered by gendarmerie units roughly 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) south of Kesikkavak village in the Haymana district.
